You wouldn’t go to ballet class wearing golf shoes, and you wouldn’t play basketball in Soccer shoes. Each sport uses a specific kind of shoe to make it easier on the body and gives the foot (and the body) what it needs to do well. –Examples are ; flexibility, grip, arch support, ankle support, etc…
So, why wear a running shoe to dance Zumba? I see it all the time. When people come to chat about knee, hip, and ankle joint pain, the first thing I ask about is their shoes.
Turn your running shoes over and look at the tread. That kind of shoe tread is meant to propel you forward, and it works really well -for running. But is not so great for swiveling, pivoting and salsa-ing. 😉
Dance fitness shoes are made with very little tread, are lightweight, may have metatarsal cushioning and some even have little pivot circles to allow you to turn with ease. Say, “goodbye” to joint pain!
You can find these shoes easier than you think. They are made by brands you know, like Nike, Puma, Reebok and even Zumba has their own brand. I love the Zumba shoe, but I’ve also worn a Nike cheer shoe and a few other brands. Try looking up Dance Fitness shoe on Zappo’s to see a great selection. Or go to Zumba.com to order Zumba brand. I’ve also found them at the Nike outlet store occasionally. Prices can range from $50 -80 approx., which I know is a chunk, but your body is worth that extra care. Plus it’ll cost a lot more at the doctor’s office trying to figure out why your knees hurt all of the time.
If you are a Zumba or Zumba Toning student, I seriously hope you will give this some thought. Having the proper equipment will make all the difference in the world.
